Edited by: Re Mi on 01/02/2008 19:52:32 Edited by: Re Mi on 01/02/2008 19:49:12 I say it will be Smashkill.
Why?
Because they have a culture that will attract a large force, they have proven they can survive serious downturns and losing space, they learn from their mistakes, and they are a coalition force so they understand politics.
Why not RA? Because they are old. They will lose their best players through attrition and their force will be hollowed out over time. RA has already peaked in terms of their player base and are increasingly reliant on cap ships because of their lack of numbers.
Why not Goons? Strategic friction. Goons hold too much space, and have too many neighbors compared to their military power, and they make enemies too easily because of the constant chafing with everyone. This will lead to Goons always being under threat from multiple fronts. Over time this will force a certain kind of defensiveness.
Why not Tri? Because they think too highly of themselves and are over confident. This will lead them to get into fights they can't win, and when they lose there is a much greater chance of failure cascade because of their expectations for victory.
*edit - I forgot BoB Why not BoB? Basically they will constantly be under assault leaving them unable to wage offensive war.
*edit - time frame of 18 months
Opine as needed, but please, no whining.

Originally by: aadom Depends what you classify as "military" A large capital ship fleet? A huge base of [skilled]members? The ability to fund & replace the costs of war? And an effective leadership?
All your listed alliances have these to an extent, but its how they go together continoulsy over time that will effect their future "military" power.
I honestly dont think Smashkill will be a "great military power" in 18months. I think their dug in tight, and can defend themselves aswell as the next. But as for their offensive capabilities, i dont think they can develop anymore.
Military power = power to crush your enemies. Who do you think will be number one then? Care t venture a guess?

but crushing your enemies on what terms? ability to conquer a system quickly, ability to win in large fleet combat, ability to win in smaller gang combat?
because honestly, each thing could arguably have a different "winner".
I would put it like this. Anyone in your way, you can remove them, in whole, or in part to achieve your ovjectives by blowing up everything they have. Persistent, durable and tenacious and able to wear down anyone over the long run, and overpowering in the short run. The criteria is part of the speculation.

you may say that, but how do they come out on top in so many battles? You have to admit... they know how to hold there space, and know how to take space they want....

Ok, so let me get this straight, it is better to fight for months to take a system than it is to take it in on night?
Anyway, you aren't proposing an alternative. If they aren't going to be the number one contender, than who is?

I'd say AAA or Tri.
I am curious why you pick AAA? Seems to me they wouldn't have the ambition to take that spot.

Originally by: Viktor Konstantine heh, a "military" thread without -A- mentioned in the the first post. They don't need "ambition" to be in the top spot, the simple fact of the matter is that they will kill you, *****the remains, then throw what's left in the burner to fuel future conquests. You must get a lot of insight into 0.0 politics in Funshine Unlimited, they clearly must be an authority.
I guess I see AAA as a local power. They don't seem to involve themselves with people far away, or want huge amounts of space. If they did, they would be adding the regions on BoB's doorstep to their space, but they aren't.
Anyway, I am projecting into the future about who will be the largest power. I don't see AAA growing to be an equal to the BoB of 6 months ago or RA now (who I would currently place as the number one power), even though ppl say AAA are very powerful. What I find interesting is that in the past powers have come and gone, and that often the future power base is a completely unexpected player.
Do you really believe that AAA is going to be the number one military power in EvE? They will be powerful, but I doubt number one. And as I posted earlier, I don't think they want to be that.

Originally by: Jane Spondogolo I don't think its sensible to tease apart RA & the Goons. There is almost no probability of those 2 ending up on different sides. The strategic partnership is too entangled to tease apart, alongside the friendships.
There is a strategic cleavage point. The Goons will use their power to kick a lot of ppl around. This will start a lot of small wars that RA may not want to bother with. And many small wars can join into one big one. I don't see them still being allied in 18 months, the law of averages will catch up with them. This is what I mean by strategic friction. There will be a constant hum of omnipresent aggression that will sap Goon resources and cause their allies to step back.

Originally by: Jane Spondogolo Ok. Smash/Kill. Heres my take. For the most part, they are pretty good guys. Peoke gets up a few peoples noses, but so do quite a few alliance leaders.
The thing however with Smash/Kill is the advantages they do have, basically being able to beat the hell out of most mid sized alliances, isn't the same as the ability to go toe to toe with the biggest guys.
And thats because the highest levels of end-game war are just not that fun. Its a lot of POS spamming/sieging/titan stupidity/supercaps-online sort of nonsense and it requires a particular type of mass psychosis I don't think they have.
And I'll put them thus on a similar sort of ranking as Tri. Pretty good, but more interested in fun than controlling all of 0.0. And possibly lacking the stamina to do so.
AAA are a different kettle of fish. Some sort of hybrid between Tri and RA. They DO seem to have the stamina to fight long boring POS wars, like RA. But I doubt they find it much fun.
Heres my guess on it all however. If Tortuga pulls out of this scrap alive and kicking, and I think they will, they will be a power to watch. But all bets are off on how that one pans out.
Heck no one finds it much fun, but its all a matter of priorities.
Good points. Tortuga deserves consideration too. Interesting perspective on the differences between the alliances.

My vote is on RA. They would probably be the next superpower. And they also have the biggest meatshield of them all: GoonSwarm.
Goon meat shield. Good point. RA scares me though, so I don't want them to be number one.
